Flossmoor Veterans’ Memorial, Inc. (FVM) will host its annual family-friendly Trivia Night at 7 p.m. Friday, March 14, at FCC Community House, 847 Hutchison Road.
The Trivia Night will be a six-round event with 10 questions per round. First prize is $150, with the second-place team winning $75.
Topics will include Where the Wild Things Are (questions about zoo animals); Name That TV Show; Google Earth, where participants identify famous sites from a photograph; Sink or Float, where participants predict whether an everyday item will sink or float in a tub of water; and Flossmoor Lore.
Returning this year will be Military Trivia, with questions read by Retired Rear Admiral Patrick Driscoll, a Homewood-Flossmoor High School alumnus and former commanding officer of the Blue Angels.
Retired Flossmoor Mayor Paul Braun, president of FVM, shared an update on the memorial. FVM is in the process of clearing the site just off of Flossmoor Park and removing utility poles so construction can begin as soon as the warmer weather breaks.
The volunteer efforts have been successful, but there are new goals..
“Since our launch in September 2021, we have raised over $140,000 in direct donations and grant support for the Flossmoor Veterans’ Wall of Honor project.
“Our Trivia Night events have contributed nearly $19,000 toward that goal, including a record-breaking $8,500 in 2024,” he said. “We hope to raise at least $5,000 at Trivia Night 2025 and encourage moms, dads, and kids of all ages to join us for fun and fellowship. It’s the perfect way for residents to support this community effort and to honor all our veterans.”
FVM also will have commemorative plaza bricks for sale at the Trivia Night. For a $125 donation, a brick can be engraved with the name and service of a veteran for installation in the donor plaza.
In addition to a large selection of raffle items, FVM will have other webstore merchandise for sale, including logo sweatshirts, challenge coins, commemorative shovels from the August 2023 groundbreaking, and the Historic Flossmoor Sites coloring book.
New webstore merchandise for 2025 will include “Fragments of Flossmoor: A Series of Essays on the Interesting, Curious, and Unique in Our Village” and a new volume on the history of Flossmoor’s Civic Center building. All sales benefit the Wall of Honor project.
“We’ll keep residents updated on our fundraising goals,” said Braun. “We welcome every donation and greatly appreciate the community’s support.”
Advance registration for teams or individuals is required; seating is limited to 10 tables of six. Cost is $20 per person or $100 per table. Refreshments are available for purchase, but outside food and drink will not be permitted.
FVM expects to construct the Veterans’ Wall of Honor on a 9,500-square-foot parcel owned by CN and located north of Flossmoor Road and east of the Metra/CN tracks. The Wall of Honor will provide a tribute to all current and former Flossmoor residents who are serving or have served our nation’s Armed Forces.
