Election 2025: Introducing Troy Holmes

Note: This is the sixth in a 10-part series introducing candidates who are on the ballot for the first time in village board races in Homewood and Flossmoor. Flossmoor has a surge in trustee candidates this year. In 2023, four candidates ran for three four-year terms. This year, two incumbents are seeking re-election, and five newcomers are competing for the three open seats. More information about candidates will appear in the Chronicle’s March 1 edition.

Troy Holmes has not lived in Flossmoor long — he and his family moved to town a little more than a year ago — but he did not waste time before getting involved in the community, starting by attending Public Art Commission meetings and advocating before the village board for spreading the village’s sculpture collection to more neighborhoods and including more minority artists.

He is running for a seat on the village board.

“Appreciation of art was a big thing that I saw here in the Village, and I wanted to definitely jump right into that.”

He said he would love to see the village government provide more support for the commission, if possible, so it would have the means to expand its reach and diversity.

He recently helped found a new non-profit organization, Flossmoor Art Council, to promote all the arts in the village.

Support for the arts is not the only thing Holmes would bring to the board.

He is accountant by profession and sees budgeting and economic development as efforts he can contribute to.

“I’m seeing in the budgeting process that we’re starting to operate at a deficit,” he said, and he’s worried that could balloon if not properly managed.

“I’ve been to most of the village board meetings since I moved here,” he said. “What I saw were great things and the not so great things. I wanted to see what we could do as a village (to) correct those.”

One area of improvement is communication with residents.

“There never can be too much communication, but I think it needs to be smart.”
