Jack and Jill volunteers collect for 2 organizations

Moms and their children greeted donors at Western Avenue School in Flossmoor on Monday as they collected food stuffs and toiletries for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project, one of more than a dozen projects that were part of the Village of Flossmoor’s 10th annual King Day event.

Jack and Jill of America Inc.’s Monarch Cities Chapter hosted the three-hour event. Despite the cold, a steady stream of donations came in. The organization participates each year in the annual village Day of Service, but their efforts rotate between needy organizations.

King Day Chairperson Latisha Malone said this year the group collected more than 400 items — 300 food products that will benefit the Jones Community Center’s Food Pantry and 100 items for the New Life Centers’ Women’s Shelters. In the past their efforts have benefitted the Prairie State College Trio Program and Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS).

The Jack and Jill Monarch Cities Chapter has 60 members who come primarily from the South Suburbs.
