Donations, everything from packaged foods to new and gently used sporting equipment, can make Flossmoor’s 10th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service a special event on Monday, Jan. 20.
The community is invited to donate needed materials and items to be used by various organizations, including feminine hygiene supplies, used sporting equipment, craft supplies, LEGO kits, clothes, toys, food items, and baby needs to be packaged and shared with those in need.
Craft supplies: The Flossmoor Green Commission is accepting donations needed to create an environmental craft bird project. Donate yarn, fabric scraps, craft paints and glue, beads, sequins, etc. as well as markers, scissors, construction paper, pipe cleaners and ribbons. Items can be left at Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road, Thursday and Friday, Jan. 16 and 17.
Sporting equipment: New and used sporting equipment will be collected through Monday, Jan. 20, by the Flossmoor Firebirds Baseball league in conjunction with Leveling the Playing Field. Drop-off sites are the Flossmoor Public Library, Flossmoor Park Pavilion, Infant Jesus of Prague School and any District 161 school. Pickup service may also be available. Feminine hygiene products: Boxes of tampons and sanitary pads can be brought to Open Access, 900 Maple Road in Homewood, to be shared with their clients and partnering agencies. Drop-off is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
Store-bought baked goods, new socks: Plan4Success is collecting for service agencies, clinics and 911 centers. Donations will be accepted through Sunday, Jan. 19, at the east entrance of the Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.
Non-perishable foods and hygiene products: Jack and Jill of America Inc. Monarch Cities Chapter will be collecting beans, soups, cereals, oatmeal, canned meats, pancake mix, syrup, pasta, as well as shampoo, body wash, lotion, toothpaste, deodorant at Western Avenue School, 940 Western Ave., Flossmoor, on Monday, Jan. 20. The group will work to assemble donations from 12:45 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Parker Junior High. Donations will be delivered to Jones Memorial Community Center Food Pantry and New Life Women’s Shelters.
Full-size personal care items: Anew: Building Beyond Violence and Abuse, a Homewood-based organization, will be collecting body wash, lotion, deodorant and hair care products from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Parker Junior High School.
LEGO building kits: Any size LEGO kit will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road, for distribution to hospitalized children through the Bricks of Hope organization.
Winter clothing: New winter gloves, hats, mittens, coats, scarves and socks will be collected at 19642 Governors Highway, Suite 106, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, by Little Fannies Healthy Housing. Items will be donated to unhoused people and to A Caring Hand Foundation for Pregnant Teens.
Non-perishable food items: Collected food items for Center for Food Equity in Medicine can be left at Dunning’s Gourmet Market, 1050 Sterling Ave., Flossmoor, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20.
Baby’s needs: New baby clothing, diapers, wipes, blankets and bottles can be donated from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Jan. 20, at Infant Jesus of Prague School to benefit Aid for Women.
New and gently used children’s books: Drop books at the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Fieldhouse, 800 Governors Highway, Flossmoor from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 20.
Non-perishable foods, new blankets and pop-top pull tabs: Drop donations at Sunrise Senior Living, 3633 Breakers Drive, Olympia Fields, through Monday, Jan. 20, at the main entrance. Donations will be given to LaRabida Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.
Gently used clothing and children’s toys, non-perishable foods: Help Calvary Assembly of God Church, 18620 Governors Highway, Flossmoor, replenish its food pantry between 5 and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20.
