Park district approves $6.32 million levy

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District board approved its 2024 tax levy of $6,322,438. It is an increase of 4.84% over the previous year of $6,030,414.

Taxing bodies can raise taxes by the Consumer Price Index, this year at 3.14%, or a maximum of 5%, whichever is less. Because this levy was greater than the 3.14% CPI, the board conducted a Truth in Taxation hearing before adopting the levy on Dec. 3.

Karen Garrity, superintendent of finance and administration, said the levy is higher because the board is trying to capture as much new property as it can to get it onto the tax rolls. The Cook County Clerk’s Office will adjust the final levy accordingly.

The levy is divided into 10 separate funds. The three major funds are:

  • Corporate fund — $2,301,924 covering salaries, supplies, utilities, employee insurance, etc.
  • Recreation fund — $1,013,732 covering program expenses, building and field rentals, uniforms, contract instructors, etc.
  • Bond & Interest — $1,277,672 to cover the park district’s debt.

Taxes are also collected for a variety of special funds, such as audit, social security and Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, workmen’s compensation insurance, etc.

Park district numbers show property within the park district valued at $885,357,425 for 2024. This is an increase of $159,977 over the 2023 EAV of $843,197,548. The 2022 EAV was $606,884,320.
