Chronicle partner: Governors State University

Governors State University (GovState) is celebrating 55 years of excellence, as well as the 10th anniversary of the first freshman class in 2024. In the last decade, the University has enjoyed record growth in its freshman students and athletic programs.

On the academics side, GovState has elevated educational programs across campus most notably with the Honors program. Now an Honors College with the largest freshman cohort in its history coming this fall.

Supporting academic excellence, the University has opened two centers to help meet students’ needs in the last year.

The Latinx Resource Center (LRC) opened in 2024 to serve the growing Hispanic student population.
Complementing the LRC, the Social Justice Initiative moved into a free-standing building near Prairie Place Residence Hall in September 2024.

The 2,600 square foot building is a community resource that supports those navigating the legal system, a barrier to education.

On the athletic field, 15 teams proudly wear the GovState Jaguar jersey. Among the scores of highlights are a 2018 Men’s Basketball NAIA Division II national championship, as well as impressive showings in women’s basketball, men’s soccer and both cross country teams.

In the past decade, GovState hit historic milestones. However, the most visible and impactful event has been welcoming the institution’s first African American president, Dr. Cheryl Green, in 2020. The strides in enrollment, as well as the vision for both the SJI and LRC were a gift from Dr. Green whose number one goal remains to elevate the visibility of Governors State University.

At the center of the mission are students whose quest for academic success drives everything we do from course and certificate offerings to student clubs and activities.

Students, along with our vibrant and diverse faculty, are the jewel that is Governors State University.
In the coming years, the University will continue shining as an example of academic excellence and innovation across the Southland and region. The Honors College, led by Dr. David Rhea, this year reports a record freshman year cohort, driving enrollment and excellence.

Paired with academic achievement, performance on the athletic fields brings excitement to campus.
This year, 15 teams wear the GovState Jaguar jersey, representing sports from basketball to soccer to volleyball. Wins include:

  • 2018 men’s basketball championship.
  • 2023-24 women’s basketball Coach of the Year for Toneisha Mack.
  • Five of five years in the CCAC post-season playoffs for men’s soccer.
  • Both men’s and women’s cross-country teams securing conference wins.

Making victory even sweeter, more than 60% of the student-athletes have earned GPA of 3.0 and above.
Looking forward, in 2024, a coed Esports program joined the roster to compete in the NAIA’s CCAC Conference. We are GovState!

Congratulations to the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle on 10 years of dedication to community and commitment to journalist integrity.
