Governors State University’s (GovState) Social Justice Initiative (SJI) is launching a Justice Corner Series, a discussion space featuring scholar activists that are advocating for social justice in America and around the world.
The first session will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the Social Justice Building on Governors State University campus, 1 University Parkway, University Park.
The first guest will be Vincent R. Jones, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences and the author of “The Problem with Capital Punishment and Why It Should Be Abolished in America.”
Jones takes a harsh, critical look at the theories that support the use of capital punishment and exposes the truth about this punishment, from its errors to its expenses.
Jones has said that social justice is a part of who he is, going back to his days training for the Olympics to his current work in academia.
“I think that I have a natural inclination to want to see justice and fairness, going back to being an athlete and wanting sports to be fair all the way into my academia where I decided I wanted to be a lawyer and defend people that were being mistreated,” said Jones in a recent interview for GovState’s weekly news show, This Week at GovState (TWAG).
