The main excavation work to create the storm water detention basin adjacent to Heather Hill School in Flossmoor is done, according to an update posted Friday, Sept. 6, by Public Works Director John Brunke.
Grading and topsoil placement has been completed, he said, and heavy machinery has been removed with the exception of one bulldozer for use by the landscaper if necessary.
Work on installing a permanent, six-foot fence is expected to begin next week.
The village had set a goal of having the excavation work done by Aug. 15 so there would be no overlap with the school year, but Brunke reported to the Flossmoor Board of Trustees in August that weather delays prevented the contractor from meeting that deadline.
The project has been controversial in recent months. Residents who oppose the placement of the basin near the elementary school have spoken out at village, school district and park board meetings.
Brunke said village staff will continue to assist monitoring the basin site “during the school’s recess periods until the permanent fence installation is completed.”
Sidewalk and curb repair and replacement will be done later in September.
Landscaping, which will include planting native vegetation, also will follow later this month.
