Carla Erdey, director of communications and community engagement at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, received the Barry Gaskins Mentor Legacy Award from the National School Public Relations Association.
Erdey joined the H-F staff in July 2022. She came to H-F from District 230, with high schools in Orland Park, Tinley Park and Palos Heights, where she was director of communications.
Erdey is active in the National School Public Relations Association and the organization’s Illinois chapter has named her the Illinois Distinguished Communicator.
The 2024 Barry Gaskins Mentor Legacy Award is given in recognition of Erdey’s outstanding efforts in mentoring colleagues new to school public relations; providing counsel and advice on job success; and assisting colleagues in their professional development through initiatives geared toward improving their PR skills and knowledge.
“Carla helped shape me as a leader to understand how, why and when to share a message,” says District 233 Superintendent Scott Wakeley. “Without hesitation, Carla was always willing to support the development of new professionals.”
Currently her major task is working with consultants who are helping redesign H-F’s website.
