ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS — Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave., will host a petting zoo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Animals from Little Starr Farm of Manhattan will be available for kids to see, pet and feed. Registration is $6 per person for Homewood-Flossmoor Park District residents, $8 per person for non-residents. Click here to register.

NATIONAL HOT DOG DAY — A summertime tradition returns to Irwin Park, 18120 Highland Ave., from noon until 2 p.m. Beef and vegan hot dogs will be available for $2. Water, soda and chips will be available for $1 each. 

AVOID RUSE BURGLARIES — The aftermath of big storms can be prime time for ruse burglaries. Homewood police posted a warning Tuesday cautioning residents to be wary. “A ruse burglary is a distraction technique used to lure homeowners outside of their homes and is often done by individuals posing as contractors. After the homeowner is outside the home and distracted by one individual, other individuals enter the home.” Police urge residents to report anyone who appears suspicious by calling 911. Anyone soliciting in Homewood must register with the village and will have ID badge.

UNIVERSITY PARK METRA STATION CLOSED — Metra announced Tuesday, July 16, that because of a power outage and flooding in the pedestrian tunnel, the University Park station would be closed until further notice. Riders should use the Richton Park Station.
