Villages observe Memorial Day

Homewood and Flossmoor observed Memorial Day with separate ceremonies on Monday, May 27.

Wally Burns VFW Post 8077 hosted a ceremony at the Homewood Veterans Memorial on Harwood Avenue to honor those who died serving the country.

The combined Parker Junior High/James Hart School band and the Homewood-Flossmoor High School marching band provided patriotic music.

Speakers included post Commander John Beele, Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld, Rev. Ron Kondziolka of St. Veronica Catholic Church and Pastor Keitric Emory of Abundant Grace United Church of Christ.

Marine Sgt. Carlos Espinoza and Staff Sgt. Marco Martinez assisted with the presentation of wreaths.

Flossmoor residents gathered at the island downtown for the annual Taps Across America ceremony.

Village Trustee Jim Mitros extended greetings from Mayor Michelle Nelson, who could not attend this year.

Trumpeters Joey Bonanotte, Rocco Bonanotte, Sarah Whitlock, Annie Ford, Charlie Wachtel, Kelly Cooper and John Whitlock sounded taps, and the Bel Canto Community Choir sang the theme songs from each military branch.
