H-F media students take top honors in competitions

Homewood-Flossmoor High School students have won five first place awards and numerous honors in state and regional media competitions.

Midwest Media Educators Association

MMEA presented two first place honors to H-F students.

The Viking TV team winning first place honors for their efforts on the daily newscast are Oreoluwa Shodipo, Laila Dyer, Sommer Owens, Cameron Williams. Watch their program:

The other first place winner in the MMEA competition was Ashira Blakey for a movie trailer for “A Prom Ghost.” Watch her creation here:

Jasmen Walter took third place honors in the documentary category for her piece “The Overlooked Mother” exploring the role of African American women as workers and mothers. Her work is here:

“The Basement Barstool” talk show with host Douglas Austin interviewing H-F football and track star Brandon Brigham took fourth place in the talk show category. He was assisted by Theo Holloway. The show is here:

A public service announcement “Kindness” created by Charlie Wachtel took fourth place honors. It depicts a homeless person saving a man’s life. The PSA is here:

A fifth place honor went to Jasmen Walker for her “Viking Insight” talk show discussion with an H-F alumnus. Her work is here:

H-F students brought home three first place awards among their honors in various categories at this year’s IWPA competition.

A first place award went to Tim VanEtten for his WHFH radio show “Redesigning Learning” in the radio/television interview or talk show category. VanEtten’s guest was Joseph Muller, a science teacher, discussing shifting the curriculum to consider a student’s mastery moving away from traditional teaching methods. It is posted here: 

In the video features category, Charley Dieringer and Tristan Lewis took first place for their profile of Career & Technical Education department programs.  

A first place honor went to Jasmen Walker for her profile of the girls field hockey team that was keeping their spirits up looking for a few wins in the season. Her winning entry is here:

Second place honors in the interview or talk show category went to Jasmen Walker for her “Viking Insight” show interview with an alumnus. Find it here. 

In the video news story category, second place honors went to Emmanuel Wright and Harry Komorowski for their piece on the Homewood Business Association’s “Witches Night Out” shopping extravaganza with a Halloween flare. Find it here:

In the video features category, H-F brought home two honorable mentions for a “Student of the Week” profile by Charlie Wachtel and Nikolai Lawrence.

 Also, Cameron Williams won an honorable mention for social studies teacher Jon Elfner’s podcast on interesting history.

The second place winners in the sports category were Kymora Scott and Chris Tompkins for their profile “Volleyball Perseverance” about player Frances Smith’s efforts to help win the game, despite being blooded during a fall on the court.

 An honorable mention went to Declan Klyn and Macy Hamer for their profile of “Baseball’s Newest Coach.”
