The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Scholastic Bowl team placed in the top eight teams in the IHSA state meet, after winning regional and sectional competitions.

Senior Jack Piros was named to the Scholastic Bowl All-State team. He is only the third H-F player in school history to be All-State twice. He will be honored at the IHSSBCA banquet at Illinois State University on April 20.

Scholastic Bowl pits an H-F team against another school’s team in a timed competition to see which team can provide the most correct answers to questions from a wide range of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture and sports.

In regional competition, H-F defeated TF North and TF South to move into competition with the reigning regional champions from Marist High. H-F scored 480 to Marist’s 330 to win the regional title and the chance to move to sectionals.

At sectionals, H-F defeated Lincoln-Way East and went on to win against Sandburg High, the No. 1 team, 420-390. H-F lost to Lincoln-Way Central, but had already secured the right to move into state competition. By winning two of three matches, H-F won a place in state competition in early March.

At state, H-F took eighth place.

H-F teacher Michael Sacks has been coaching Scholastic Bowl the past 21 years. The assistant coach is teacher Tiffany White.

Next, nine members of Scholastic Bowl will compete in a History Bowl competition in April, coached by Sacks. Over the four-day tournament, students will compete as a team and individually in political science history, geography, and science categories.
