Matteson woman dies Friday in possible hit and run on Governors Highway

A Matteson woman died Friday morning, Feb. 9, possibly a victim of a hit-and-run accident on Governors Highway.

Flossmoor police and fire units responded to the 19600 block of Governors Highway about 9:35 a.m. to investigate a possible fatal accident involving a pedestrian.

“A female victim was found unresponsive near the road at 196th Street and Governors Highway this morning,” Flossmoor Police Chief Jerel Jones said. “Emergency teams responded from the Village of Flossmoor and determined the victim to be deceased. Our sincere condolences go out to the family of the victim of this tragedy.”

The victim has been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Aaliyah A. Leonard, 23. Relatives have been notified, according to village officials.

Jones said that police detectives are currently investigating, along with the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team (S.M.A.R.T.), and that there is no active threat to the community.
