Ellen Moore (born Rowe Ellen Crowley) passed away peacefully in her sleep at a retirement home in Coralville, Iowa, on January 9, 2024. She was 86 years old.
Rowe Ellen was born at St James Hospital in Chicago Heights, Illinois, on November 3, 1937. Her parents were Claire Francis (Gierman) Crowley and William James Crowley, Sr, both of Homewood and both of whom predeceased her.
Rowe Ellen attended Homewood and Flossmoor Public Schools and Bloom Township High School. She went on to achieve her bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she met her to-be husband, Romaine Bendixen. After graduation she followed him around the world while he served in the Navy as a Flight Surgeon. Rowe Ellen and Romaine had two children before separating.
Later, Rowe Ellen moved back to Homewood and married Robert Moore, changing her name from Rowe Ellen Bendixen to Ellen Moore. She remained in Homewood for many years, working at a local bank, until her parents passed away; then she moved back to Iowa City to be near her daughter, Anne Bendixen.
Anne lives in Iowa City and provided love and support to her mother. Ellen’s other child, a son, John Bendixen, lives in Salt Lake City. Ellen has three grandchildren. Kent Bendixen, John’s son (Hiromi), lives in Salt Lake City. Anne’s children are Artemis (formerly Isobel) Bendixen Holmes, of Denver Colorado, and Nezzy__ Conway, (formerly Oskar Bendixen Holmes.) lives in Iowa City. She is also survived by her sister, Susan Crosby of Bend Oregon and William Crowley, Jr., of Austin Texas. No memorial service is planned. Ellen might have been pleased if any memorial contributions were made to the SPCA.
