District 233 commends Coach Smith for 500 wins

The Homewood-Flossmoor High School school board celebrated a significant milestone by girls varsity basketball coach Tony Smith at the Dec. 19 board meeting. 

The school board honored Smith for achieving his 500th career win as a basketball coach. The big win came at home against Sandberg on Dec. 12. 

Smith, who has been shaping the lives of young athletes for more than 20 years, started his illustrious career at Bolingbrook before bringing his expertise to Homewood-Flossmoor High 11 seasons ago.

Smith’s dedication and commitment to coaching have led to numerous victories.

“In 2015, he led the team to fourth place in state finals. In 2023, he received a nomination for the IL Basketball Hall of Fame,” the school posted on social media.

He also is credited with instilling values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance in his students. Members of the school board expressed their gratitude for Smith’s contributions, highlighting the profound impact he has had on students and the community.
