FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE — The annual Homewood Fire Department open house will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the department, 17950 Dixie Highway. There will be safety activities and demonstrations, the Cook County Sheriff’s Support K-9 Unit will be answering questions about staying safe in emergency situations and the UCAN medical helicopter is expected to visit.
ECLIPSE WATCHING PARTY — Homewood Public Library will host an eclipse-watching event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the library, 17917 Dixie Highway. It will be a day of science, fun, crafts, and a chance to visit with Juliet Crowell from the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at The University of Chicago. No registration required.
THE LITTLE MERMAID — 23 Miles Theatre will present “The Little Mermaid” at 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday at Abundant Grace United Church of Christ (former St. Paul Community Church), 18200 Dixie Highway in Homewood. According to the theater’s website: “You’ll love following the Little Mermaid on her first journey to the Top of the Sea. There she meets the shy but funny Ollie, in training to be king and not exactly her idea of a storybook prince. Together they confront the Sea Witch, who is desperate to get her hands on the mermaid’s most precious possession.”

THE ADDAMS FAMILY ON STAGE — The Drama Group will present America’s kooky, spooky Addams Family on stage at 330 202nd St. in Chicago Heights, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12, 13, and 14. Matinee performances will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14; and Sunday, Oct. 15. Ticket prices for The Addams Family are $19 to $25. ROLLER DERBY — The Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby will host a bout between the Comic Book Crushers and the Horrific Haunters on Saturday in Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road. Doors open at 7:15, action begins at 8 p.m. General admission tickets are $15. Trackside tickets are $20. Accessible seating available at no extra charge. HIKE VOLLMER ROAD WOODS — Jay Readey and Kwame Amuh will lead a one-hour guided hike along a portion of the Outerbelt Alliance through the Vollmer Road Woods at 9 a.m. Saturday.
