Faith Lutheran accepts donations for asylum seekers

This summer, Christine Cochrane, a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Homewood, heard a seminary student talk about reaching out to people to meet their needs where they are. She said his words inspired her to work for the benefit of asylum seekers reaching the Chicago area.

Cochrane has been collecting items on her own, but now she is being assisted by members of her church who will be accepting items from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and 9:30 a.m. to noon on Sundays at the church, 18645 Dixie Highway in Homewood.

Volunteers will deliver the items to appropriate delivery centers. The church is also looking for volunteers who will help take the items to the distribution center. Cochrane has been working through the Little Village Community Council in Chicago. If the volunteers learn of asylum seekers in the South Suburbs, donations will be shared with them, she said.

Suggested donations include:

  • Winter clothing, all sizes.
  • Shoes and boots.
  • Mittens and hats.
  • Personal items and toiletries.
  • Packaged underwear.
  • Suitcases.
  • Purses.
  • Pajamas.
  • Diapers and baby goods.

Persons seeking more information, or who wish to volunteer during drop-off times or help deliver donations, can contact Cochrane at 708-921-1447 or by email at  [email protected].
