U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly issues statement on speaker’s historic removal

On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the post. It was the first time in the nation’s history that a speaker was voted out.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly, D-Ill, who represents Homewood and Flossmoor, issued the following statement on McCarthy’s removal as speaker.

“I remain dedicated to fulfilling my Constitutional responsibility to govern responsibly for the people of the Illinois 2nd Congressional District, and our entire nation. This is a solemn day, House Republicans have been driven by disruption, dysfunction and extremism.

“Alongside my Democratic colleagues, I remain committed to prioritizing the interests of the people over politics, seeking common ground, and effectively serving my constituents. The responsibility to resolve their internal conflicts and extremism now falls upon House Republicans.
