Shooting leads to crash on Halsted early Saturday

One person was shot in an apparent exchange of gunfire between southbound vehicles on Halsted Street in Homewood early Saturday.

Homewood police said they received a report of shots fired at about 1:39 a.m. Officers responded to the 18000 block of Halsted Street and found a man with gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.

“Initial investigation indicates that two vehicles traveling southbound on Halsted exchanged gunfire resulting in one of the vehicles crashing during the incident,” police said in a statement.

Residents on the east side of Homewood reported on social media that they heard what sounded like an explosion about the time of the incident, but police said they were not aware of an explosion at the scene.

However, a third vehicle that was not involved in the shooting was hit by one of the two vehicles. The third vehicle struck a utility pole on the west side of Halsted.

No one is in custody as of late Saturday morning, according to police.

The Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit is conducting an investigation of the incident. Police urge who may have information about this incident to call 708-206-3420.
