Hillcrest High School officials announced on the school’s Facebook page Saturday that a teen was shot and killed following the homecoming football game Friday, Sept. 15.
“Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all those involved in this tragedy,” the statement read. “We in District 228 are committed to the safety and overall well-being of our students and staff. The district will have supporting resources available on Monday for anyone who may need them.”
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Marshawn Mitchell, 14, of Hazel Crest died of a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.
Hillcrest won the game 48-40 over Oak Forest. Hillcrest High School’s Saturday night homecoming dance has been cancelled, according to the school website.
The Country Club Hills police are investigating the shooting.
