James Hart School’s girls softball team is entering competition for a sectional title in the Illinois Elementary School Association hoping to win a spot on the state softball championship roster.

The team won the regional championship game Tuesday, Sept. 12, defeating Chicago Heights Middle School. The score was tied in the fifth inning, but the players pulled out a 6-4 win. That victory gave the team the chance to advance to sectionals.

Hart will next face Frankfort’s Hickory Creek Middle School team on Saturday, Sept. 16. During the 11-game season, Hart lost only three games, one to Hickory Creek, but the team believes they are ready to take them on again, said coach Ginny Donohue.

Players on the 14-member Hart team are sixth, seventh and eighth graders Zoe Barnas, Layla Danta, Adelai Easter, Jada Kimble, Deyani Lawrence, Kailyn Moreland, Payton O’Neil, Taylor Purchas, Chloe Schneider, Caliece Townsend, McKenzie Weber, Maeve Welsh, Taja White and Charlotte Will.

Coaching alongside Donohue is teacher Nicole Elget.
