Freedom Trail tour offered Sept. 23

Reservations are being accepted for the Sept. 23 free hike on the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project’s Freedom Trail.

The tour is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will mark the first anniversary of the trail’s Illinois state historical marker unveiling.

Participants will start the tour at Beaubien Woods Boat Launch, 134th and the Little Calumet River. Larry McClellan, an authority on the Underground Railroad in northern Illinois, and Tom Shepherd of the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project will share their knowledge of the area and present stories of the escaped slaves, called Freedom Seekers. Using historical records, McClellan will explain how participants traveled the Underground Railroad through the south Chicago region seeing freedom in the north prior to the Civil War.

A bus takes participants to various sites. Moderate walking is required to get to specific locations. The tour is co-sponsored by the Forest Preserves of Cook County and the Calumet Heritage Partnership.

Registration is at https://bit.ly/3L2R3TM. Seating is limited.
