Drama Group presents ‘Once on This Island’ in August

The Drama Group’s August production, the one-act musical “Once on This Island,” tells the story of a peasant girl who lives on an island and falls in love with a rich boy, but she is forced to overcome prejudice to win love.

The rousing Calypso-flavored music will take you to a Caribbean island where the girl is rescued from a disastrous storm by four gods – mother of the earth, god of water, goddess of love and demon of death. The myth told through “Once on This Island” deals with Black joy and sorrow, the aftermath of colonization and isolation, and the triumph of love against all forces.

This Tony Award-winning musical is based on the novel “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy and the popular fairy tale told through “The Little Mermaid.”

The musical will be presented over two August weekends. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5, and 2 p.m. Aug. 6. The following weekend, 7:30 p.m. performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10, 11 and 12; a 2 p.m. show on Saturday, Aug, 12, and a 2 p.m. Sunday show on Aug. 13.

Tickets are $23 for general admission, $21 for senior citizens and $17 for students. The Drama Group uses the online ticketing service BookTix Ticketing and Livestreaming.
