New beauty supply and tobacco stores open in Homewood

A new beauty supply store and a tobacco shop recently opened in Homewood. The building they share, formerly a Discount Tire outlet, is barely recognizable now.

About a month ago, DNA Beauty Supply and Smoke Shop Superstore began welcoming customers to their new locations at 810 Maple Avenue in Homewood. From the outside, customers may notice that the building is painted a modern gray. Garage doors were replaced by large windows. Inside, it may be hard to remember that the building was once used for automotive service.

DNA Beauty Supply sells a wide variety of items. Cosmetics and hair extensions line the walls of the recently renovated shop. According to owner Tamer Kafawin, haircare products are the most popular items among customers.

Kafawin is not a stranger to the beauty supply business. DNA Beauty Supply has multiple locations in the city. The Homewood store is the fifth.

“Customer service is our main priority,” said Kafawin. “We have five stars on Google. It is important to make things look good on the outside but ‘DNA’ stands for the beauty within.” Kafawin said that his store’s inner beauty is complimented by the helpful staff he has selected.

Next door, the Smoke Shop Superstore has everything a customer might expect to find in a tobacco shop and more. In addition to cigarettes and vaping products, there is a large walk-in humidor full of cigars. The store also sells pipes and smoking accessories along with a selection of unique gifts.

An ordinance passed in August of 2022 limited the number of stores allowed to sell tobacco in Homewood. The rule allows only one store in the village to sell tobacco and tobacco products as its primary source of revenue. In December, village trustees voted to increase the number of ancillary tobacco licenses from 17 to 18.
