H-F sports wrap: Track highlights Vikings season

The boys track state championship was the highlight of spring sports for Homewood-Flossmoor High School, but the girls team’s sectional title was another peak as the Vikings head into summer. 

The H-F girls track squad controlled the Thornton sectional, winning with 136 team points including eight individual event titles. Kenwood was second with 76 team points.

H-F scored eight points in the state meet. Angela Alozie was fourth in the 400 meters. The senior was also named South West Suburban Conference athlete of the year.

The doubles team of Austin Thomas and JoNick Coleman were Oak Lawn sectional champions, beating Stagg’s Peter Zawislan and Jude Welsch 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the final.

Coleman and Thomas, who were both sophomores, lost 6-0, 6-0 to Mason Ballard and Vikram Kondagunta of Belleville East in the first round of the championship bracket. In the consolation bracket, Deerfield’s Spencer Kastin and Konrad Piotrowski beat the Vikings duo 6-3, 6-0. 

Boys Volleyball

H-F advanced to the regional final with 2-0 wins over Bowen and Stagg in the first two rounds. St. Rita won the regional final, though, 25-22, 25-22. 

The Vikings were 23-15. 

Baseball

The Vikings’ season ended in the regional opener with a 7-6 loss to Andrew. It was an up-and-down season for H-F, which finished 19-16 overall and 5-8 in the SSC Blue. 

Senior outfielder Dillon Head, a Clemson commit, hit .486 with six home runs, 21 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He was conference player of the year. 

Softball

Homewood-Flossmoor softball struggled down the stretch during the regular season but won a playoff game, topping Joliet West 11-7 after a bye to open the postseason in Class 4A.

The Vikings lost by the same score to Lincoln-Way East in the regional final. 

Lacrosse

The Vikings played only one postseason game, falling 14-4 to Plainfield North. They finished the regular season 4-15. Jacob Sline, a junior, led the team with 29 goals and nine assists with a .758 face off percentage. 

Badminton

Amina Kendrick was a state qualifier for H-F. She won her first match in the state series 21-17, 21-10 over Anna Tinebra of Schaumburg but fell to Naperville North’s Shannon Xu in the next round 21-7, 21-2. 

Girls Soccer

The Vikings won a regional semifinal over Oak Lawn 5-0 but lost in the final 2-1 to Andrew. H-F was 10-9-2 on the campaign. Junior Dakota Dixon paced the team with 15 goals.

Boys Water Polo

The boys water polo team finished 7-17 in 2023. It won a sectional quarterfinal 11-7 over Shepard and finished the year with a 17-7 loss to Lincoln-Way East.
