H-F student video projects advance to national competition

Five Homewood-Flossmoor High School students’ projects will be entered into the National Federation of Press Women’s High School Communications Contest.

The students are part of the Viking TV and broadcasting program under the direction of teacher Mark Ciesielski.

The students took first place honors in the Illinois Women’s Press Association 2023 high school communications contest to advance to nationals.

First place awards were presented to:

  • Timmy VanEtten in the Radio or Podcast Prepared Report section for his work titled “Lunch Prices.”
  • Patrice St. Jean in the Radio/Television Interview or Talk Show section for her work titled “Student Activists.”
  • Ashley Rosales in the Video News Story category for “Drama’s New Play.” 
  • Lea Ryndak in the Video Feature Story for “Sewing.” 
  • Nate Locker and Kalel Fargo in the Video Sports Story category for “Bigger than Basketball.”

Illinois Women’s Press Association also awarded second place honors to:

  • Timmy VanEtten and Jalen Allred-Coleman in the Radio/Television Interview or Talk Show section.
  • Ella Aceves and Eliya Hobson in the Video News Story section.
  • Nate Locker and Josh Fajardo in the Video Feature Story section.

Third place honors were awarded to:

  • Patrice St. Jean in the Radio or Podcast Prepared Report section.
  • Jasmen Walker in the Video Sports Story section.
