H-F Scholastic Bowl team wins in recent competitions

Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s Scholastic Bowl team has had a winning season.

Scholastic Bowl pits an H-F team against another school’s team is a timed competition to see which team can provide the most correct answers to questions from a wide range of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture and sports.

On Feb. 15, the team won three rounds. Teacher sponsor Michael Sacks used several reserve team members. In the first round, H-F won 340-30. The effort was led by junior Giselle Paramore. In the second round, H-F won 150-40. In the final round, H-F won 150-40 led by sophomore Annelise Latham.

On Feb. 18, H-F’s team of seniors Rodney Branch and Mickey McGrory, junior Jack Piros; sophomores Annalise Latham and Everett Van Til; and freshman Luke Debruin won fourth place at the Masonic Sectional. The team went 4-3 defeating St. Ignatius, Shepard, Minooka and Crete-Monee High Schools.

H-F’s top players received significant recognition with Branch and Piros being named to the All-Conference team and the Masonic All-Sectional team, and McGrory being named to the Masonic All-Sectional team.

On Feb. 22 at the SWSC Championship Tournament H-F’s varsity and frosh-soph teams finished in fourth place out of 10 teams.

In competition March 6, the team was named IHSA Regional Champions with winning scores of 540-30, 390-250 and 400-270.

H-F hosted the IHSA Sectionals on March 12. Sandburg High finished first to advance to state competition. The H-F team finished in fourth place.
