Viking Choir get superior ranking in choir contest

The Homewood-Flossmoor Viking Choir received a superior ranking, the highest honor possible, at the Joliet Choir Contest on Feb. 11.

H-F choir director Steve Sifner said it was the first time the Vikings had competed in the event, now in its sixth year. Judges listened to 12 choirs representing eight schools. H-F was the only school to send three choirs – the Viking Varsity Choir, the intermediate group Concert Choir and the Treble Choir made up of freshmen sopranos and altos. The combined choirs have 151 members.

Sifner said the judges were impressed by the number of students involved in choir at H-F. He said having three choirs says much about the support the program receives.

H-F students were able to choose the music for the performance. Sifner said he selected works students learned in fall and finessed over the next several months. The group was accompanied by Vonda Hardesty, fine arts department accompanist.

In addition to the superior ranking for the varsity choir, both the Concert Choir and Treble Choir received rankings of excellent. The Concert Choir earned a “best tenor section” honor and the Treble Choir earned a “best alto section” honor.
