South Suburbs for Greenspace to host informational meeting on Calumet Country Club redevelopment

South Suburbs for Greenspace (SSG) will host an informational meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Wiley’s Grill, Coyote Run Golf Course, 800 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor, regarding the industrial development plans for Calumet Country Club.

The group is encouraging Southland residents, particularly Hazel Crest residents, to learn about the developer, its plans for the property, and ask questions about this quickly moving process.

SSG plans to share material that it has obtained from FOIA requests to Hazel Crest, Homewood and Cook County.

Many Hazel Crest residents have expressed frustration to organizers and to the Hazel Crest Board of Trustees because they haven’t been informed about the developer’s plans to annex the Calumet Country Club into Hazel Crest and rezone it to a manufacturing district.

Shatisha Woods, a Hazel Crest resident and mother of two young children, said, “The residents clearly expressed their concerns at the (Jan. 24 board) meeting, and we all want more information on the plans before there is a vote to annex in the property. Voting without regard to resident concerns or fully informing the residents is not how a transparent government works.”

Among other items, SSG will have copies of memos from the Hazel Crest attorney describing the development’s improbability, a timeline of the development’s history in Hazel Crest and campaign donation information from illinoissunshine.org.

SSG will be giving free “Truck No” yard signs to Hazel Crest residents and will have T-shirts for sale. SSG will provide soft drinks and snacks, and Wiley’s Grill will be open with larger plates and alcoholic beverages available for purchase.
