1st installment tax deadline moved to April 3

When Cook County took extra time to switch its computer system, the usual September deadline for paying second installment taxes was pushed back to December.

Through a state law passed in December, the deadline for Cook County first installment taxes has been moved back from the usual March 1 date to Monday, April 3, according to Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas. 

Bills for the first installment will be mailed out in late February or early March, but bills are already available online at www.cookcountytreasurer.com for viewing or payment.

Visit the website to make a payment or download a copy of the tax bill, follow these steps:

  • Select the blue box labeled “Pay Online for Free.”
  • Search by property address or enter your Property Index Number.
  • Payments made at cookcountytreasurer.com before 11:59 p.m. on April 3 will be recorded as on time.
  • Partial payments are accepted.

There is no fee if payment is made from a bank account. Late payments are charged 1.5 percent per month, as required by Illinois law.
