Heather Hill Elementary school opened its doors on Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. Destiny Watson, founder and CEO of You Matter 2, sought out community members and volunteers to make lunches for the homeless served by South Suburban PADS and tie blankets for Project Kennedy, a nonprofit helping cancer patients and their families.
You Matter 2 has volunteered for five consecutive years at Heather Hill.
“We’re overflowing, a good problem to have,” Watson added, “We have had over 100 volunteer submissions for today alone.”
Watson, a Homewood-Flossmoor High School alum, said, “We reached our capacity for volunteers today.” Watson said. ”Each year we hold this event at Heather Hill, we’re finding more people are hearing about us.”
Watson said, “You Matter 2 is drawing members and volunteers from the H-F community and beyond working towards our mission, our cause of creating opportunities for our youth.”
You Matter 2 reported its MLK Day of Service volunteer efforts impacted and benefitted nearly 6,000 youth and families.
“We try to partner with You Matter 2 as frequently as possible,” Heather Hill’s Principal Ashley Holland said. “Developing a supporting engagement for our students and members within our community is wonderful.”
Sisters Sani and Sari Zinnerman, both juniors of H-F High, have been volunteer members for You Matter 2 for almost four years.
“I love this event, and it’s a lot of fun seeing my friends and family be part of making a change in our community for the better,” said Sani.
