District 233 school board extends contracts for H-F superintendent, principal

The District 233 school board voted to extend the contracts for Homewood-Flossmoor High School Superintendent Scott Wakeley through June 30, 2027, and Principal Clinton Alexander through June 30, 2026.

All seven board members agreed to the terms of Wakeley’s contract. Board members Nathan Legardy, Cynthia Turnquest, Pam Jackson, Debbie Berman and Gerald Pauling agreed to the new terms of Alexander’s contract. Members Steve Anderson and Michelle Hoereth abstained on Alexander’s contact.

Anderson told the Chronicle, “While I am very excited about (principal Alexander’s) performance with the district in his first few months on the job, I felt it was somewhat premature to offer such a lengthy contract extension.”

Hoereth said she didn’t want to comment on her vote, but added, “I’m excited about the energy Dr. Alexander brings to H-F and I’m looking forward to the positive impact he will have on the district in the months to come.”

The board discussed the contracts during a two-hour closed session during the regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Wakeley was appointed superintendent-elect in March 2021. His contract was approved in April 2021 with a start date of July 1, 2021 at a salary of $230,200 for the 2021-22 school year.

When he stepped into the superintendent’s job in July 2022, his salary was set at $235,200 with a percentage increase equal to the teachers’ raise reached through collective bargaining or he would accept a salary of $240,200.

The superintendent’s salary for this year is $249,100.

The school board agreed to extend Wakeley’s contract through the 2026-27 school year. For 2023-24, his salary will be $264,046.  Over the school years 2024-25, 2025-26 and 2026-27, Wakeley will receive a 3% increase each year, or a Consumer Price Index (CPI) adjustment based on the CPI as of June 30 “preceeding commencement of the contract year.”

The contract also stipulates Wakeley’s increases will not exceed 6% in accordance with credible earning restrictions of the Teachers Retirement System.

Principal Alexander was appointed in December 2021 and stepped into his role as principal on July 1, 2022. The board gave Alexander a one-year contract. Now it is extending his contract through 2025-26 school year.

Alexander’s salary is $170,000. He will receive a 5% raise for 2023-24 boosting his salary to $178,500; a 3.5% raise in 2024-25 boosting his salary to $184,748 and a 3.5% raise in 2025-26 boosting his salary to $191,214.
