Thwart theft
The Homewood Police Department announced last week that it is launching a new program to remind residents to take steps that can help avoid loss due to theft from vehicles. #9PMroutine will provide a nightly reminder to residents to “remove valuables from their vehicles, lock their vehicle doors, lock the doors to their residences, turn on exterior lights and activate all alarms and security systems.”

Police suggest residents get in the habit by setting a reminder on their phones or other devices.

“Criminals look for easy targets.  You can make it more difficult for them by following the #9PMroutine,” police said. “Many vehicle burglaries, and to a lesser degree, stolen vehicles, occur as a result of vehicles being left unlocked.  Criminals walk through neighborhoods, trying vehicle door handles, hoping to find an unlocked vehicle.”

Rail strike may be back on the table

A few weeks ago the threat of a freight rail strike temporarily disrupted Amtrak routes through Homewood. The strike, which would have paralyzed significant portions of the nation’s economy, appeared to be averted as the deadline loomed. However, one of the unions involved in negotiations, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division, voted against the proposed contract last week. Al Tompkins of Poynter Institute has more details. We’ll keep an eye on the situation.
