Fire demonstration, UCAN helicopter to highlight annual Homewood Fire Department open house on Saturday

The annual Homewood Fire Department open house will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 17950 Dixie Highway. The family event is filled with activities for kids that also will impart fire safety lessons.

Megan Tipton, HFD event coordinator, said kids (and parents) will have a chance to learn the answers to these and other questions:

  • Have you ever wondered why firefighters cut holes in the roof of a burning building?
  • How much does all the equipment firefighters carry and wear weigh?
  • How fast can a fire truck go?
  • What does all that equipment in the ambulance do?

Tipton said the theme of this year’s event is “What To Do Before Help Arrives.” The emphasis is on first-aid measures of all sorts.

The popular live burn/sprinkler demonstration will be back this year, and Tipton expects a visit from the University of Chicago Medicine Aeromedical Network helicopter. And, kids can practice their escape skills with a trip through the smoke trailer.
