Officials mark switch to new water supplier for Homewood, Flossmoor

On Tuesday morning, July 26, Homewood and Chicago Heights officials met at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and 183rd Street just south of Thornton to mark the opening of the valve sending Chicago Heights water down a new main to Homewood.

The mission for the first day was to flush the main. On Wednesday, Chicago Heights water will be mixed with water from Homewood’s current source, Harvey, in a mixture that will be increased incrementally until the village is receiving 100% Chicago Heights water, probably by the end of September.

The switch to a new water supplier has been in the works since late 2020. The change also affects Flossmoor, which purchases water from Homewood. The two villages will be joined by East Hazel Crest, too, according to Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld.
