‘Waldo’ is coming to Homewood, bringing summer fun and boosting local shops

Where’s Waldo? This summer, you’ll be looking for him in Homewood.

The iconic children’s book character in the red-and-white-striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting 15 local businesses throughout the community during July. This year is the 10th anniversary of Find Waldo Local, a summer vacation activity designed to help support local businesses.

Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Homewood stamp card, which contains the names of all the participating sites, including: 

  • Art Corner, 18703 Dixie Highway.
  • Bookie’s Book Store, 2015 Ridge Road.
  • Culture Popcorn, 18035 Dixie Highway.
  • Empanadus, 1943 Ridge Road. 
  • Homewood Library, 7917 Dixie Highway.
  • Homewood Science Center, 18022 Dixie Highway.
  • Loulou Belle, 2049 Ridge Road.
  • Melody Mart, 18062 Dixie Highway.
  • Redbird Café, 2057 Ridge Road. 
  • Serendipity Yoga, 18300 Dixie Highway.
  • South Suburban Humane Society, 2207 183rd Street.
  • The Village Gift Shop, 2007 Ridge Road.
  • Thomas Photographic, 18705 Dixie Highway.
  • UpsaDaisy, 18100 Martin Ave.
  • Van Sipma’s Jewelers, 2011 Ridge Road.
  • Village of Homewood/Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.

Where’s Waldo passports are available at each participating store. Each time players spot Waldo, they can get their card stamped or signed by the participating shop. To make things a little more challenging, there will be one slightly different Waldo hiding in Bookie’s Bookstore.

Collecting store stamps or signatures at 15 or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers to enter a grand-prize drawing for Waldo books and paraphernalia.  

Author Martin Handford’s collection of books with crowd scenes took the world by storm in the late 1980s, and the Waldo books remain popular. More than 78 million Waldo books have been sold worldwide, and they’ve been translated into over 30 languages. An entire generation has grown up searching for Waldo.

Candlewick Press is teaming up with the American Booksellers Association and hundreds of independent bookstores across the country to promote the hide-and-seek fun. There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts for the entire month of July.
