It was a walk for the dogs when South Suburban Humane Society hosted the Fast & Furriest 5K event Saturday, June 18, in downtown Homewood.

The temperature was a pleasant 76 degrees for the humane society event that drew 68 participants who walked, trotted or ran the 5K course or took the shorter one mile walk. The annual event helps raise funds for SSHS operations.

Several of the dogs were adopted from SSHS. Their grateful owners came out to continue their support for SSHS.

Dave Simpson of Crete said he’s fostered several dogs for SSHS, and decided to adopt Bucky, an American Bulldog. Karen Cole is a volunteer with SSHS and adopted her dog from the shelter four years ago.

The 5K was a week after SSHS hosted a grand opening for the community at its new facility in Matteson. The agency will keep its building in Chicago Heights, but has moved its services to the building specially designed for the health and wellness of animals.

SSHS also will continue the operation of its pet adoption center in Homewood.
