Cook County offers advice for using the new free COVID-19 test program

The federal government on Tuesday unveiled a program to provide free COVID-19 tests to anyone who applies at covidtests.gov.

The Cook County Department of Public Health posted answers to frequently asked questions about the program.

Free COVID tests will be shipped to residents who apply, with no questions asked.

“You do not need insurance, a credit card, or any identification, just a mailing address,” county officials said. “The process takes about two minutes.”

The site began accepting orders Tuesday, but because high demand is expected, it could take up to a week, or perhaps a few days more, to receive the test. The tests are free. No proof of insurance or credit card is required to order tests.

Each household can order up to four tests.
