October calendar is full of autumn community events

Event organizers seem to have adapted to pandemic safety measures so people can gather safely, and October looks like it will have a pre-COVID-19 number of community events. Here is a roundup of some key events.

Oct. 1

  • Jazz Night, the final Trail Mix Acoustic Concert, features Andy Pratt, the JC Duo, In Time and Kenya McGuire Johnson; 6:30 p.m. at Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road, Homewood.   • The Drama Group presents “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” at 7:30 p.m. at the Milord Theatre, 330 W. 202nd St., Chicago Heights. The show is also presented at 7:30 p.m. Oct 2 and 7, and at 2 p.m. Oct. 3. Tickets information is at dramagroup.org.

Oct. 2

  • Recycepalooza, an annual recycling event, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Parker Junior High parking lot, 2810 School St. in Flossmoor.
  • Branch chipping at Homewood Municipal Service Center, 17755 Ashland Ave., 8 a.m. to noon.
  • Homewood Farmers Market, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Martin Square between Chestnut Road and Ridge Road.

  • In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Village of Flossmoor welcomes Chicagoland’s first all-female mariachi band, Mariachi Sirenas! They will bring their musical talents to downtown Flossmoor with a strolling performance of traditional mariachi music from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Bistro on Sterling will feature a special menu of authentic Hispanic cuisine from Chef Yvette Zavala.

Oct. 7

  • Homewood Cares – Not For Profit Meet and Greet from 5 to 8 p.m. in Martin Avenue Square between Chestnut Road and Ridge Road in downtown Homewood. Rain location: Homewood Auditorium. Many not for profit organizations that provide services to the community are also having challenges recovering from the pandemic. This is a chance to meet representatives of organizations and learn more about them.

Oct. 9

  • Homewood Fire Department open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 17950 Dixie Highway, with activities for all ages, a visit from the UCANN medical helicopter and a fire suppression demonstration.
  • RC Float & Fly, 10 a.m. to noon at Dolphin Lake, 2700 183rd St. in Homewood.
  • Fast & Furriest, a 5K run to benefit the South Suburban Humane Society. Race begins at 5 p.m. at La Voute Bistro + Bar, 2034 Ridge Road in Homewood. Register at https://bit.ly/3hCQyBk.

Oct. 10

  • Opera Up Close: “Viva La Zarzuela” at the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University. Performers will sing music of the Iberian Peninsula to Latin America, with dancing by Ensemble Espanol; 4 p.m., tickets are $50, CenterTickets.net.

Oct. 15

  • Going away party for Kate Duff, longtime Homewood Farmers Market manager, from 6 to 9 p.m., with live music and food vendors.

Oct. 16

  • Good Gourd! FCC Fall Community Party, 2 p.m. at the Flossmoor Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor. Live music fall-themed activities and contests and fun for all ages! Free and open to the community.
  • We Scare Hunger Trail, 5 to 9 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road, Flossmoor. Sponsored by You Matter 2 as a benefit to Respond Now.
  • Day of the Dead Fest, 5 to 9 p.m. Martin Square between Chestnut Road and Ridge Road in downtown Homewood. Celebrate Dia de los Muertes with art displays, authentic music and a showing of the film “Coco.”
  • The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra opens its 2021-22 season with a 5:30 p.m. concert of Copland, Ewazen and Price. The performance is at the Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. College Dr. in Palos Heights. Ticket information is at ipomusic.org.

Sunday, Oct. 17

  • Pink-A-Boo Walk of Hope fundraiser for the Cancer Support Center; walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at CSC offices, 2028 Elm Road, Homewood.

Oct. 20

  • One book, One Flossmoor community reading project. Participants will discuss “Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann at 7 p.m. in a virtual meeting. For more information, visit Flossmoor Library.

Oct. 21

  • Witches Night Out, a shopping event sponsored by the Homewood Business Association from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Homewood.

Oct. 23

  • Homewood Wellness Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Homewood Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road in Homewood.

Sunday, Oct. 24

  • Walk Walton, a celebration of the Science of the Season for the Homewood Science Center from 9 a.m. to noon at Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood. Tickets are $10 for adults. Kids get in free.

Oct. 29

  • Flashlight Pumpkin Hunt at Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center, 20000 Western Ave. in Olympia Fields. Registration required at webtrac.hfparks.com/wbwsc/webtrac.wsc/search.html. Fee is $10 for H-F Park District residents, $12 for non-residents.

Oct. 30

  • Trick or Treat Trail at Millennium Park, 18600 Harwood Ave. in Homewood, for kids 11 and younger. Free, but registration required at bit.ly/hftricktreat.

Oct. 31

  • Halloween trick or treating in Homewood, 3 to 7 p.m.

Nov. 2

  • Homewood Business Association holiday reveal. Check out holiday-themed window displays in downtown businesses.
