Annual open house to celebrate Homewood Fire Department’s 125th anniversary

After a year’s hiatus, the Homewood Fire Department once again will host its annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The department invites the community to help it celebrate 125 years of service to the village.

The event will include family fun activities and a chance to learn something about the history of the fire department, firefighting and how to keep your family safe in an emergency.

The big special attraction this year will be a visit by the University of Chicago medical evacuation helicopter (UCAN). The helicopter is scheduled to arrive between 11 and 11:30 a.m. Arrival time is approximate and may be delayed or canceled if there is an emergency that requires the helicopter crew to respond.

Another special guest this year is forensic scientist Dominique Barksdale, who has worked in varying areas of forensic science. She is affiliated with the Cook County morgue. Her open house presentation will focus on the forensics of fire investigation and arson.

In addition to the medical helicopter visit, the open house will include touch-a-fire-truck, a fire safety superhero obstacle course, a trip through the smoke trailer, a live burn demonstration on the effectiveness of sprinkler systems and more.
