COOLING CENTER - The weather is expected to remain hot for a few more days. Flossmoor officials remind residents that the Police Department lobby at 2800 Flossmoor Road serves as a cooling center in the event of extreme weather. Masks are required for all visitors.

PETS IN NEED - The South Suburban Humane Society is full to the brim and has put out an emergency call for people to adopt or foster a pet in need. Find out how you can help by visiting the SSHS website.

Fall events

Saturday, Sept. 24

  • Homewood Fall Fest and Chili Cook-off, noon to 9 p.m. Chili tasting is open to the public for a donation from 3 to 5 p.m. Three live music performances, plus horse-drawn wagon rides, a pumpkin patch, crafts and other activities.

  • Dia de los Muertos in downtown Homewood. Details to follow.
