The 24-year-old man who died in an early morning weekend crash has been identified as Leland D. Jones Jr. of County Club Hills, according to a spokeswoman from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Around 5 a.m. on July 24, Jones was driving his maroon 2016 Chevrolet Malibu west on 187th Street near Loomis Avenue in Homewood when his vehicle hit a tree.
When Homewood emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after 5 a.m., they found Jones already deceased.
Public release of Jones’ name was delayed while authorities worked to locate and notify his next of kin.
An autopsy is planned for Jones, who was from the 4000 block of 190th St., and results will be released by the medical examiner’s office.
Homewood Police Department continues to investigate the crash, with assistance from the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team. Authorities ask anyone with information about the crash to call (708) 206-3420.
