H-F experiences flooding in the usual spots from recent rains; IDOT reminds public to stay safe around flood waters

After a week of almost daily heavy rain, the weather relented for a nice holiday weekend, but during the rainy week, the usual local flooding problems occurred.

In Flossmoor, the Flossmoor Road viaduct had to be closed to traffic several times early last week, according to Public Works Director John Brunke.

Several temporary street closures were also required, mostly in places that are frequently vulnerable to flooding, including Berry Lane, Dartmouth Road and Evans Road, Brunke said.

In Homewood, the Dixie Highway viaduct was closed three times during the rainy period. The 183rd Street viaduct, which has an updated drainage system, did not close, according to Assistant Public Works Director Patrick McAneney.

The only road closure was at in the area of Heather Road, Perth Street and Stewart Avenue for a short period, he said.

After a few dry days, the forecast is calling for increased chances of rain Wednesday night and again Friday night through Monday.

The Illinois Department of Transportation sent out a reminder recently about how to stay safe when encountering flood waters.

“A few inches of water might seem harmless but can be powerful enough to carry away a person or vehicle,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don’t drown.”

IDOT reminds motorists to take the following precautions:

  • Even if water covering a road seems shallow, do not attempt to cross it.
  • Seek higher ground if your vehicle stalls in a flooded area. Do not attempt to push your vehicle out of the water.
  • Anticipate longer driving distances and travel times to get to your destination if roads are flooded or closed.
  • Follow any posted detours.
  • Keep your cell phone charged.
  • During inclement weather, ask yourself if your trip is necessary or could be postponed.
