Community Band preparing for two July concerts

After COVID-19 silenced the Community Band in 2020, James Hart School music teacher Matt Johnson is ready to bring the sounds of music back to Irwin Park in Homewood for two free concerts in July, and he is still looking for volunteers to play with their fellow musicians.

The band concerts are hosted by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District.

Johnson has two themes for the band programs.

The 7 p.m. July 15 concert will be Music of the Sea, including folk songs and pop songs that are “all related to water in some way,” he said.

The 7 p.m. July 29 concert falls during the Olympic Games, so Johnson is planning music from around the world.

The Community Band is made up of volunteer musicians who want to enjoy performing with a group. All members must be fully vaccinated, and high school musicians must have completed freshman year and be signed into band for next year.

The first rehearsal will be Tuesday, July 13.
