COVID-19 numbers: May 12

Wind Creek Hospitality, the Alabama-based company that has been pre-approved by the Illinois Gaming Board to operate a casino and hotel just off Interstate 80 where Homewood and East Hazel Crest meet, started out in a bingo hall.

Built on a reservation belonging to the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in southeast Alabama, the wooden hall hosted games played with paper cards and held occasional 24-hour lock-ins, according to Arthur Mothershed, a Poarch Band . . .

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
