A wind-whipped grass fire on Saturday afternoon filled the sky with smoke near the west side of Flossmoor on Saturday afternoon.

The fire burned an estimated 10 acres of Bartel Grassland near Flossmoor Road just west of Interstate 57, according to the Tinley Park Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Klotz said the weather complicated the work of extinguishing the fire.

“The wind definitely played a role,” he said. “We thought we had it, and then the wind changed.”

The National Weather Service issued a fire danger warning early Saturday because of predicted windy conditions, low relative humidity values and very mild temperatures, conditions that could allow fires to burn out of control.

Klotz said no firefighters or residents were hurt in the incident, and no wildlife casualties were observed.

Travel on two roads in the area were affected by the fire. Ridgeland Avenue traffic was limited by the presence of fire trucks, and Center Avenue was closed briefly because of heavy smoke.

Units from Country Club Hills, Flossmoor, Homewood,  Markham, Riverdale and North Palos helped fight the fire, which was reported about 4 p.m.

Klotz said the blaze was under control by 8 p.m. and the last unit left the scene about 8:30 p.m.
