Virtual ‘Being the Dream’ celebrating African American art

“Being the Dream,” a celebration of African American life, talent and culture, is being presented by the Drama Group as a virtual performance.

The show is done in two segments – a gallery and a performance. The Drama Group work is available through a YouTube link at www.dramagroup.org

The gallery section has many pieces of varied styles, and the Drama Group worked collaboratively with Prairie State College, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, Salon Artists Gallery and other local organizations to present art and music created by African Americans in the region.

For the performances section, works are packaged together as a patchwork quilt depicting beauty and pain, history and mythology, melody in music and meters in poems.

Kelly Campos is directing the two productions. The producers are Mary Ellen Fawk and Tony Labriola. The show was videotaped by Brett Casey and Brandon Berrey.

The Drama Group starts its 90th anniversary this year. Although the theater at 330 W. 202nd Street in Chicago Heights is closed due to COVID-19, members will continue to find new and varied ways to bring theater to local audiences. Visit www.dramagroup.org for updates.
