Homewood carjacking attempt brings attention to growing problem

Dozens of volunteers gave their time Saturday for the annual Recyclepalooza event staged by the Flossmoor Green Commission.

Drivers were greeted by volunteers for an easy, COVID-19 protected event. All volunteers were masked and donors did not need to get out of their cars. Volunteers did all the work accepting a wide variety of items – from shoes and sports equipment to old TVs, electronics and even a snowblower.

The three-hour event at the Parker Junior High parking lot had volunteers from the Green Commission and students from Parker Junior High and Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Saturday, July 2

  • Roots + Fire Water grand opening, 11 a.m. at 1941 Ridge Road in Homewood.

Monday, July 4

  • Flossmoor Volunteer Fire Department kids parade, starting at 10 a.m. at Parker Junior High, ending in downtown Flossmoor.
  • Homewood 4th of July parade, staring at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot, 17951 Dixie Highway, south to Ridge Road, then east to Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, where there will be a community picnic.
