This is Spirit Week at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, a virtual celebration that is substituting for the traditional Homecoming.
Student Government member Jordyn Johnson, a senior, said the theme is “Separated but Still United” to remind students “we’re separated but still united as a school even if we can’t physically be together.”
Students from each class and the Student Government Executive Council planned a schedule over four virtual meetings. Each day’s planned events will be buffered by videos and contests.
To kick off the week Oct. 19 through 23, Student Government members passed out red and white H-F yard signs on Friday afternoon. Several hundred were handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Special dress codes for the week are: Pajama Day on Monday; Mask Off Day on Tuesday; Dress to Impress on Wednesday; Activities/Athletics/Viking Pride Day on Thursday. In addition, students will be able to get in on a virtual spirit photo, play Viking Pride E-Bingo and take part in Viking Pride challenges — driveway chalk art, pumpkin carving and in a student’s personal space by decorating it with drawings, signs or decorations.
Gail Smith, director of activities, said rather than the traditional pep rally before a football game, students will enjoy videos of clubs and organizations and student submissions shown during the last 10 minutes of their lunch period. The traditional Homecoming Dance won’t be happening, but Smith said Viking TV students are putting together a special program, “Spirit Showcase,” for Friday evening that will highlight interviews, entertainment and contest winners.
